Do hormones determine your penis size?
Your penis growth is mainly dependant on the production, release and the blood level of certain male
sex hormones. These hormones include the following:
- Testosterone
- DHT
Testosterone
Testosterone is a hormone that promotes the development of the penis and scrotum in the fetal and embryonic stages of development. As men age, they experience a drop in testosterone levels, often resulting in hair loss, muscle loss, an increase in body fat, and a decrease in sexual drive and function. For these reasons, many men seek out healthy ways to increase their testosterone levels.
DHT
DHT is the hormone that is responsible for penis growth during puberty. It is considered to be the essential androgenic hormone as it is responsible for the formation of male primary sex characteristics during embryonic life. It is responsible for the development of most secondary sex characteristics in males at puberty, and it continues to be important to male sexual function throughout adult life.
The penis grows relatively slow from birth until puberty. At puberty, the production of testosterone is increased. Some of this testosterone will be converted into Dihydrotestosterone (or DHT). DHT is produced by breaking a double bond in testosterone. An enzyme called 5- alpha-reductase breaks the double bond located at testosterones' fifth carbon. Increased amounts of DHT are the cause for thicker darker hair (facial and pubic), increased muscle mass, thicker skin, stronger bones, and increased production in semen, as well as helping maintain the normal function of the prostate gland.
DHT is also responsible for making the penis grow. The amount of DHT that one can produce and the sensitivity of your hormone receptors to DHT are two of the main factors that predict penis size. The faster you can convert testosterone to DHT and/or the more sensitive your hormone receptors are to DHT, the larger your penis will be. Therefore, if you are an adult male but still not happy with the size of your penis, DHT may still be able to help.
